Hawaii Whale Watching
If your visiting Hawaii in the winter months you have an opportunity to see the massive Humpback whales. Humpback whales can be found in all the worlds ocean, but they prefer to spend their time near shores and islands when they are not migrating. Humpback whales have one of the longest migration distances of any animal species, some 6000 mile round trip. Humpback whales go to cool summer feeding water like Alaska, then migrate to warmer Hawaiian water for the winter. When in Hawaii Humpback whales do not feed, they rely on stored fat in the form of blubber. In Hawaii they mate and give birth to their calfs.
Humpback whales are mammals, not fish, they breath air. A humpback adult average about 40 feet in length, and can stay underwater for as long as 45 minutes. They feed by opening their mouth and letting a high volume of water bring in many types of feeder fish, which is filtered from the water and swallow. During a Hawaii Whale Watching Tour you can see the Humpback whales famous blow spout and breaching. Breaching is when the whales shoot two-thirds out of the water and slam down on the ocean surface. In fact the name "Humpback" comes from how the whales arch their backs as they dive. Also its possible to hear the song of the Humpback whale. There are strict laws on how close a Hawaii Whale Watching Tour boat can get to a whale. These laws were made to prevent boats from harassing the whales, especially a mother with a calf. | |
