The Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals
The Hawaiian monk seal can only be found in the Hawaiian Islands. Its not know for sure exactly how it got its name. Some say it got the name "monk" because it's solitary habits, while most likely it's name comes from it's "Friar Tuck" circular hair style look. The Hawaiian monk seals average 400 to 500 pounds in weight and live 25 to 30 years. Their diet consists of reef fish, octopus, eels, and crustaceans. Hawaiian monk seals will spends days at a time hunting for food, diving for as long as 20 minutes at a time. After a long period of hunting the Hawaiian monk seal will greatly need rest, and will go to the beach to sleep and digest their food. This laying on the beach has giving the monk seal an undeserved repetition of being lazy. If you see a monk seal on the beach stay away, at least 150 feet. There once were three species of monk seals; Hawaiian, Caribbean, and Mediterranean. The Caribbean monk seals were last sighted in the 1950s and the Hawaiian monk seal needs to be protected so they dont disappear too. So you may see a monk seal from a distance but you cant approach it whether your on land or water. Hawaiian citizens will report any harassment of the monk seals to authorities. | |
